  • Red: Portrait Of A Team - Matt Reynolds Photo
Project Statement: Being a member of southern culture and a football-loving family, I have been constantly exposed to sports and athletics. Over the years, I have participated as a fan, a player, and a photographer. For this body of work, I worked to combine the sensibilities of commercial and fine art photography as I documented a group of women who play collegiate softball for Jacksonville State University. Because I was allowed access to all of the situations and environments the women are involved in on a daily basis, I became a part of the team without ever playing in a game. This immersion allowed me to gain a rare insight into the range of feelings and emotions these athletes experience throughout the course of a season. My intention is to build a catalog of these experiences; not only to celebrate their accomplishments or disappointments, but also to develop a portrait of dedication to a competitive sport and the culture associated with it.
